Joining AmeriCorps was one of the best decisions I could have made. A year ago, when I applied, I was torn not knowing whether to stay with my current employment at the time or join AmeriCorps. I am so glad that I picked the latter and joined. I was able to make so many new friendships and learn/help in communities with problems that I wasn’t aware of a year ago. I grew as a person so much in the last year with being able to learn and serve. If you told me a year ago that I would make countless relationships, be talking at symposiums, and hosting events, I would have laughed so hard at that joke. To look back and see what all has been done is like looking into all of my fears that I had. Let me tell you we certainly got things done in the past year and I cannot wait to see what the next year has in store. I certainly found the thing that I love and I didn’t even know about it a year ago.

On March 28, 2023, I accepted my position with AmeriCorps at the Rudy Gelnett Memorial Library.  I knew I would enjoy the position as Technology Coordinator.  What I didn't know, was I was about to develop so many important skills like networking, customer relations, event planning, and having an immediate feeling of knowing I was appreciated and providing a service that patrons expressed directly to me, on how I "saved" their day.  I started my second term on August 28, 2023.  Through AmeriCorps monthly convenings, I gained many friendships and learned many tidbits about other sites and our communities. As I was planning to do a third term with AmeriCorps, I was offered the position of Head of Patron Services for The Snyder County Library System.  This was a position that simply would not have been offered to me, without being an AmeriCorps service member, and not having the experiences provided to me from being an AmeriCorps service member.  I have truly enjoyed AmeriCorps and all the opportunities that it led me to.  I now look forward to providing my community with all the valuable services that I have developed within the last year and a half.  A piece of my heart will continue to stay with AmeriCorps, as I am also now the Service Site Supervisor for AmeriCorps members that will be serving with The Snyder County Library System.  Our local communities are doing great things, and I am glad to play my role to help with those great things.

Being an AmeriCorps member showed me many outlets of the community that I wasn’t aware of before. Through my service, I was able to do something I loved while helping others. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

My time with CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps allowed me to learn valuable skills while on summer break. For me, the ability to contribute to the community was the most fulfilling part.
